Navigating Fertility Treatments: Understanding the Role of Acupuncture in IVF

A recent report by the UK’s fertility regulator, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), reveals that approximately 73% of fertility patients are opting for additional treatments, commonly referred to as “add-ons” such as acupuncture, supplements, and other interventions, despite limited evidence supporting their efficacy (1).

In response, the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) has addressed concerns regarding acupuncture’s classification as an “unproven extra”. While acknowledging the need for more high-quality research, the BAcC highlights that recent systematic reviews (2,3) suggest acupuncture may enhance clinical pregnancy rates when compared to no adjunctive treatment. However, these benefits are less evident when compared to sham acupuncture, partly due to challenges in creating inert placebo controls in acupuncture studies. Moreover, A significant factor influencing study outcomes is the quality and methodology of acupuncture administered during clinical trials. Many studies have utilized standardized protocols that may not reflect individualized treatment approaches practiced by Chinese medicine practitioners which include Acupuncture treatment.

Beyond potential fertility benefits, acupuncture is recognized for supporting overall well-being, particularly during the often stressful IVF process. Moreover, when performed by qualified professionals, acupuncture has a strong safety record, with large-scale studies reporting minimal adverse effects (4).

These are the potential benefits of Acupuncture in IVF

1. Improved Uterine Blood Flow

Acupuncture may enhance blood circulation to the uterus, potentially creating a more receptive environment for embryo implantation. Improved uterine blood flow can be crucial during the implantation phase of IVF.

2. Regulation of Hormonal Balance

By stimulating specific acupuncture points, this therapy might influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, aiding in the regulation of hormones essential for ovulation and fertility.

3. Reduction of Stress and Anxiety

The IVF process can be emotionally taxing. Acupuncture has been associated with the release of endorphins and other neurochemicals that promote relaxation, potentially reducing stress and anxiety levels in patients.

4. Enhancement of IVF Outcomes

Some studies have observed that acupuncture sessions conducted before and after embryo transfer may increase pregnancy rates among IVF patients. This could be attributed to factors like improved uterine receptivity and reduced uterine contractions.
