Acupuncture is a recommended treatment for acid reflux

Acupuncture treatment is beneficial in the treatment of functional heartburn.

This clinical investigation showed that adding Acupuncture treatment in patients who were unresponsive to proton pump inhibitors drugs, which are the first-line medications for Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GRED), was more effective in controlling the related symptoms compared with doubling the proton pump inhibitors drugs.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – What is it?

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic, persistent and common medical problem. Population-based studies demonstrate that 44% of the adult population in the USA report GERD-related symptoms (heartburn and/or regurgitation) at least once a month and 20% once a week.

Proton pump inhibitors drugs are a class of medications that cause a profound and prolonged reduction of stomach acid production. However, recent studies have demonstrated that between 25% and 42% of GERD patients who are treated with standard-dose will continue to report GERD-related symptoms.

GERD Symptoms

The common signs and symptoms of GERD may include:

  • A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), usually after eating, which might be worse at night
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
  • Sensation of a lump in your throat

If you have night time acid reflux, you might also experience:

  • Chronic cough
  • Laryngitis
  • New or worsening asthma
  • Disrupted sleep

Study findings

The clinical investigation compared of two groups: One group received proton pump inhibitor (such as Lusk, Ompredex, etc.) at a dose of 40mg and the other group received the same drugs at a dose of 20mg (standard dose) and also received acupuncture treatments. The results shown that the acupuncture group had a significant improvement in heartburn as compared to the group of drugs in the double dose.

The conclusion of the researcher was that adding acupuncture when compared with doubling the drug dose was more effective in controlling the GERD-related symptoms in patients who were unresponsive to standard-dose of drug.
